Owners of the Garden Counseling Center in Pocatello are one of about 150 centers worldwide that offer this type of service.
'Traditional counseling methods require people to verbally dredge up the past,' says Brett Judd, who specializes in counseling those riddled by grief and trauma. 'We wanted to offer (our patients) another modality for them to work through their problems. Without ever having to say a word, this new technology allows them to access hidden areas of the brain to release whatever it is that may be holding them back.'
Brain State Technologies is the leading system for brainwave optimization.
Approximately a year ago, Judd and his wife, Gina, signed up to receive the necessary training to be certified providers of this fairly new technology that is computerized.
The therapy sessions can help people overcome anxiety and depression, PTSD, learning disabilities and ADHD, besides boosting performance in relation to athletics and business-like endeavors .
'We see this (technology) as a complement to mental health work, not as a replacement ,' says Gina Judd, a licensed professional counselor. 'People's problems don't go away but their ability to cope with them are enhanced.'
The husband and wife duo have both used the brain optimization technology to achieve their own mental health goals.
'I found that I was short and snippy with others when I was working on deadline . I thought it was my body's way of making sure that everything got done,' recalls Gina Judd. 'What was really happening, was that I was creating my own internal chaos. Now when I feel that anxiety coming on, I can catch it sooner, whereas before my brain would take over and do what it was used to doing. It was really empowering for me to recognize this.'
With sensors strategically placed on his scalp, Brett Judd put on a set of headphones in order to allow the sounds of resonating chimes to re-tune each lobe of his brain.
'This technology can be used to help minimize physical pain as well,' says Brett Judd. 'I was having problems with my knees, and I also used it to move past a bad car accident I was in that was negatively affecting me.'
The two have clientele, seeking out the brain optimization therapy, coming in from the Idaho Falls area, Boise, Sun Valley, Preston and Utah.
The closest centers that provide the service are located in Salt Lake City and Post Falls, Idaho.
Those who sign up undergo 10 segments of one and a half hour treatments that take place in the course of 1-2 weeks.
'We haven't had many clients who have told us they thought it was a huge waste of their time and money. The brain can fight (the therapy) but rarely does.' says Gina Judd. 'The sounds are like quiet suggestions that offer the brain's wavelengths a more balanced and harmonized model from which it can choose to follow.'
Brett Judd views the new therapy, that's been in existence for the last seven years, as an alternative to medication.
'When someone is taking a pill to combat anxiety and depression, it acts in a global manner.' says Brett Judd. 'It hits all parts of the brain, when the imbalance may not be occurring in each of the lobes. The Brain State Technologies system allows us to specifically target the areas that have too high or too low of a frequency.'
Brett Judd is also a full-time faculty member at Idaho State University where he teaches several social work courses.
